Myth #1: Liposuction is Weight Loss Surgery
Liposuction is used to remove fat deposits from the body that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. However, it should not be used as a tool for weight loss. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) states that people who are within 30 percent of a healthy weight for their size are the best candidates for this surgery. People who want to reduce body mass should use diet and exercise or bariatric (weight loss) surgery instead of, or before, having liposuction.
Myth #2: Liposuction is Only for Women
Last year, over 40,000 men had liposuction; in fact, it was the most popular plastic surgery procedure for men last year. Although it is true that women comprise a significantly larger number of liposuction patients, men are becoming increasingly interested in contouring their body with this procedure. Men most often use liposuction to get rid of fat pockets on the stomach, thighs, love handles and breasts.
Myth #3: Liposuction will Remove Cellulite
Liposuction focuses on the removal of fat to improve the overall contour of the body, for a more balanced and pleasing appearance. Because cellulite is not fat, but rather a cellular breakdown that causes damage to the skin’s connective tissue, liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite. Liposuction can smooth out cellulite to a small degree, but most often results in only a slight improvement of its appearance.
Myth #4: Liposuction Gets Rid of Fat for Good
There is a lot of confusion as to whether liposuction gets rid of fat forever, and the answer is, yes and no. Let me explain. Because liposuction removes fat cells in the area or areas treated, the cells will no longer be there to expand and create “problem areas” if the patient gains weight in the future. Any weight gain after liposuction will result in a more even distribution of weight on the body. So while liposuction does eliminate stubborn fat pockets permanently, it does not prevent the fat from returning to the remaining fat cells in the body. That is why I recommend a healthy diet and exercise regime in order to best maintain your liposuction results.
