Placing the Incisions
Every surgical operation requires an incision, which leaves a scar. That’s why it is crucial to place the breast augmentation incisions in a location where scarring will be well concealed.
The incisions for breast augmentation are typically made in one of the following locations:
- In or just above the fold under the breast (inframammary)
- Around the perimeter of the areola (periareolar)
- Through the armpit (transaxillary)
Incision location is a decision that each patient makes with the guidance of her plastic surgeon. The decision depends on the patient’s anatomy, selected implants and the surgeon’s personal preference.
In most cases, Dr. Michaels prefers the inframammary incisions for the best results. He places the incisions right above the natural breast fold, where the breast meets the rib cage. As long as the patient has adequate fullness in the lower pole (portion) of the augmented breast, any scarring should be concealed by the lower breast. The incision is actually made about a quarter inch above the fold, so even if the bottom of the bikini top lifts a bit, scarring is not noticeable.

Every breast augmentation patient is unique and heals differently, depending on factors like her skin type and post-operative incision care.
