Plastic surgery has the potential to achieve beautiful results, but preparing your body (and mind) beforehand is key. Doing so can help ensure your procedure and recovery go as smoothly as possible. In this blog post we share a few lifestyle changes to make prior to surgery.
Stop Smoking
Any qualified plastic surgeon will ask you to stop smoking weeks before your procedure. Smoking increases your risk of serious complications and may affect the way your body heals following surgery. Quit at least four weeks before surgery. Not smoking after your surgery can also help extend the results of your surgery. You should also avoid drinking alcohol weeks before surgery. Alcohol increases the chances of infection and may interfere with healing.
Follow a Balanced Diet
A diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins builds up your immune system and reduces your risk of infection. Pack your kitchen and refrigerator with fruits, vegetables and grains. Equally important is drinking six to eight glasses of water a day to flush out toxins from your body. A healthy diet along with regular exercise and sleep can keep you physically and mentally healthy before surgery.
Re-evaluate Your Medications
Before your surgery, you will meet with Dr. Michaels and he will provide a list of guidelines to follow before and after your procedure. Among the guidelines will be a list of medications and supplements to avoid. Aspirin and other anticoagulants (blood thinners) can affect your body’s blood clotting abilities, while other drugs may react with anesthesia during surgery. Be sure to discuss your entire medical history, including any medications you are presently taking, during your pre-op consultation with Dr. Michaels.
Prepare Yourself Emotionally
Plastic surgery can be exciting, but anxiety provoking at the same time. This is normal. However, stress can negatively affect your immune system. If you feel nervous or anxious about your upcoming procedure, discuss your concerns with Dr. Michaels. Open communication can often relieve most of our patients concerns. Some other tips are to practice deep breathing and positive visualization.
